Behind the Badge – Outreach in Action
The Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office welcomed local homeschool families for a hands-on community outreach event, offering a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement and public safety. Organized by Sheriff Eric Ellison, following coordination initiated by Rachel Reed, the visit brought together homeschool families from several communities and reflected a clear commitment to community outreach.

Over the course of two hours, deputies covered a wide range of topics, from drug awareness and everyday safety to a practical, kid-friendly walkthrough of when and how to call 911. The presentations struck a balance between informative and approachable, meeting kids where they are while reinforcing lessons that matter.

Beyond the demonstrations, the visit offered a deeper appreciation for the scope of the sheriff’s role. It’s not just about law enforcement; it’s a constant balancing act between officer safety, community trust, and the less visible work of keeping a department running. That includes securing the resources needed to operate across a wide range of environments, from town streets and highways to the rugged desert terrain that defines much of the region, often through grant writing and work that continues well behind the scenes.

Events like this don’t just inform, they build connections. They reflect a department willing to invest time and energy into the community it serves. Kids get the chance to see the people behind the badge, ask questions and walk away a little more confident in the world around them.
In a small community, those moments don’t fade when the visit ends.
They carry forward, strengthening trust and familiarity in ways that last well beyond a single afternoon.
